Kalidas in his Kumar Sambhavam describes how the Earth came to be called "prithvi" after King Prithu who transformed the Earth into a cow and used the mountains as efficient milkmen. He milked the earth for its mineral and plant resources but did not exploit it (P. R. Pisharoty, 1983).
