Glossary

Map is a carefully designed instrument for recording, calculating, displaying, analyzing, and understanding the interrelation of things. Its most fundamental function is to bring things in to view.

Since classical Greek times, curiosity about the geographical environment has steadily grown, and ways to represent it have become more and more specialized. Today there are many different kinds of map making, and the objectives and techniques seem very different. It is important to realize, however, that all maps have the same goal of communicating spatial relationships and forms.

People in sciences, engineering, and humanities see the map as a valuable way to organize and express ideas.
